  1. Support Cross-Cluster Migrations using S2D/SOFS Storage in Converged Environment

SCVMM (VMM) & S2D should support cross-cluster migration of highly available VMs.

Migrations of highly-available VMs from one cluster to another while using S2D and SOFS as a storage solution (NOT hyper-converged) should be supported by VMM.

VMM has built-in functionality to allow migration of a VM from one cluster to another.

This does NOT work with HA VMs when your storage solution is SOFS on S2D. The VM will be placed in pause-critical, effectively a failed migration.

I believe this is a shortcoming on the part of Failover Clustering not properly handling storage communication, but not sure as this…

  2. VHD Set support

Add VHD Set support in VMM. Support for shared VHDX and now VHD Set has been requested for years, yet VMM ignores this critical feature.

One of the greatest advancements of VHD Set over shared VHDX is the ability to migrate vhd set, yet VMM has no support for this.

Please add VHD Set management (create, attach, dettach, migrate ....) to VMM.

  3. hiddensharePrevent users from creating hidden shares from the VMM console (or support them!)

VMM Allows you to create shares that are hidden by adding a $ to the end of the name. It works fine and allows you to use them.

However, if you remove one of these shares (ie, retire it) all of the hidden shares disappear. This is because the discovery gets run and it incorrectly assumes anything with a $ at the end is special and needs to be filtered out.

At this point, all of your VMs on these shares go into an unsupported state and you lose the ability to manage VMs using VMM.

    Please allow VMM to…

  4. Add deduplication option to the Create Logical Unit wizard

Currently the Create Logical Unit wizard offers two options:
    thin provisioned and thick provisioned.
Please add 'Thin provisioned and deduplicated'
Or give each storage pool a default settings option, in which the new LUN defaults for that pool are saved (thin/thick, deduplication, compression, ...)

  5. Sort Storage Classifications by some meaningful order

When you go apply a classification to a VM's Virtual Disk in the GUI, the drop-down menu sorts things in an incoherent manner.

It appears that Get-SCStorageClassification also returns results in the same order.

It also does not appear to sort based on propreties ID, AddedTime, or ModifiedTime.

Can we at least get the VMM GUI to sort results? (Powershell can obviously be done manually.)

    Image attached demonstrating issue.

  6. Force Parent Disks to stay on specified volume if same file name already exists.

Currently, VMM will place a Parent Disk on the specified "Parent Disk" volume set on the cluster or host.

However, if the Parent Disk VHDX is changed in some way, but does not have its file name updated, the next time a VM is being created, it will fully copy the "new" Parent Disk to the next volume sorted alphabetically instead of appending a "-1" or "Copy 1" onto the file name.

    For example:

TESTVM has a single hard disk that is set to differencing:

    TESTVM-HDD-01.vhdx --> TESTVM-HDD-01-diff.vhdx

When TESTVM is created for the first time, TESTVM-HDD-01.vhdx is copied to…

  7. Include a -MaxSize option for New-SCStorageVolume that accounts for the S2D resiliency type

When you manage an S2D storage pool in VMM, the "Storage available" value that appears in the console (from the RemainingManagedSpace property of the SPACES_StoragePool object) does not account for resiliency. For example, if the storage pool is a two-way mirror with 400 GB physical storage, the VMM console shows 385 GB available. However, the largest volume you can create on the storage pool is really only 190 GB.

In this scenario, if you attempt to create an S2D volume using New-SCStorageVolume, and you specify a size (-SizeInBytes) that exceeds the actual storage pool capacity, you receive the following job…

  8. Compliance & Remediation of Storage Hosts

Currently the update management of Storage Hosts is partially limited in VMM. You can add these hosts as "infrastructure hosts" and VMM will handle them as standalone hosts. When using this way to install updates VMM is not cluster-aware and is not aware of S2D and others.

This should be improved to be able to update storage hosts s2d- and cluster-aware as this is the case for hyper-v hosts.

  9. Allow unit allocation size option when adding a LUN to a cluster through GUI.

Right now in the GUI, the unit allocation size uses the OS default, which is 4k for a LUN less than 16TB. Add an option to choose the allocation size when formatting the LUN in SCVMM. This can be done through a script now, but not the GUI.

  10. Browse/list given datastore for running VMs

Within VMM, you can list available presented storage and show the amount consumed/available. It would be nice to show the list of VMs then running on a given datastore in order to easily identify and sort by the size the biggest consumers of a given datastore.

vCenter shows list of datastores and then VMs/virtual disks stored on them in order to help determine what can be migrated to another datastore as available storage becomes constrained.

  11. Storage Availability Sets

We can currently define Availability Sets in VMM to try and keep VMs on separate Hyper-V hosts, but it would be useful if the Availability Sets could be applied to CSVs/SMB shares as well so that the underlying storage isn't a potential SPOF for the VMs.

  12. 64k allocation unit size for all volume creation tasks.

When creating cluster, volume is 64k automatically formatted. But when you add additional, its 4k.

  15. Make SMI-S more reliable

SMI-S is not reliable enough to do bulk updates to storage array's and SAN fabrics. Many failures and unexpected wait times. Retries have to be build-in service templates for provisioning just because of this.

  16. File Server Share Creation Creates Incorrect Share Type for Hyper-V

When creating a new share against a Windows File Server through ther VMM GUI the share is created using the SMB Share - Quick profile. This profile selects the options to allow caching of the share and is not the recommended share type per Microsoft. The recommended profile to use is SMB Share - Applications.
