General VMM Feedback
Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with VMM? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another VMM customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums will be monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building VMM.
This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to VMM.
Be specific on your feedback. The more specific, the easier and quicker for us to review. Please be concise!! For more information, please see User Voice How to FAQ .

Checkpoints don't inherit VM owner, when another user creates it.
We have VMs with a Self-Service owner. When a different user creates a checkpoint on that VM, within the checkpoint properties, it shows that the checkpoint was "created by" the owner, not by the user that actually created it.
Can we have it so the Checkpoint creator's name is in the "created by" field instead of the VM owner?

DCR: Customer would like a better algorithm for calculating Overcommit
Customer is sometimes 'ok' state. And other times, 'overcommit' state, even without changes in environment.
SCVMM 2016 UR4, Standalone VMM environment of 12 Nodes.
He has 192 GB free when he calculates all his HOST's free memory including the reserve node's (R1).- What we might really need here is logging of how 'ok' and 'overcommit' was calculated so the toggle between both states is understood.

use offline domainjoin instead of unattend.xml
Currently VMM is using unattend.xml for domain joins for VMs and Hyper-V hosts. This contains having unencrypted passwords stored as cleartext at some points of time during the deployment.
We would prefer using offline domain join instead - as it was done for nano server in the past.

scvmm vhd
When creating a VM from template in SCVMM, the disk name (vhd file) is named the same as the VM name. 1. This makes it match the directory the vhd file is in. 2. Saves a step which if it is missed creates a VHD the same as VHD stored in the library server ("bad"). 3. This will save "errors" if people forget to rename the VHD file prior to creating the VM.
Yes, yes automation with PowerShell or some other product can address this but this should be the default behavior in SCVMM. As if you just spin up…

Add Additional Operating Systems for VMs
It would be great if the Operating System list was something the administrator could define, but in lieu of that, add FreeBSD and OpenBSD as additional OS options for VMs.

User Voice
Much like Windows Admin Center, a suggestion I would like is in the VMM Help menu, to link directly to User Voice, for user feedback. This would be handy.

Jobs Window Pop Ups
When creating somwthing like a VMNetwork, the jobs window always pops up, can we make a preference in systems to not open a jobs window by default.

allow wildcards
Powershell modules don't accept wildcard values, like Get-VM -Name 'M*', this is available in PowerCLI on ESX, and is frustrating that it is not available. I can do a filter for results, but I would love to see this added.

Make the failover cluster manager VM role names the same as they are named in VMM and Hyper-V
Currently when you create a VM in VMM it adds a prefix and suffix to the role name when created in Failover Cluster Manager. "SCVMM ServerName Resources" for example.
When I name a VM, I want the name to stay the same no matter where I am looking. (Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager and VMM.) If I name a server "JoesWebServer" I don't want it to change in FCM to "SCVMM JoesWebServer Resources".

The Enhanced Session opens in the background
When I'm switching from basic session mode to enhanced session, the VM Console is shown behind the main SCVMM UI

Allow us to live resize the "Enhanced Session" window
We should be able to resize the VM Window, and the guest OS should change his resolution accordingly

Migrate a Stored VM from 1 library to another.
I have different libraries in different locations, on different speed networks. Some locations are deduplicated, some are not.
For me, if I want to move an item from the library to another, I have to "deploy" to a cluster, then "store in library" again to the destination library.

VMM Library - get rid of "missing" items or offer a clean up after x days.
I find it frustrating when I'm moving a lot of resources around, to have to clear out the "missing" items from the library. Library should be just treated like file explorer essentially. When its gone, its gone. If people like a audit trail, the offer a "keep history for x days" then show as missing......for x days. That would be better.

Bare-metal Deployment annoyance - load-save a previous configuration.
When deploying a bare metal host, have the ability to load a previous powershell saved configuration to predefine the settings. Useful for minor changes, or building out a configuration step by step. When adding pNIC's and vNIC's there is a lot of configuration that has to be re-entered if your testing different settings.

Ability to copy\duplicate physical computer profiles
very annoying having to build a whole new profile just for testing a minor change, especially when there is a complex network setup.

Remove optical media from running vm
Currently (1801) we are unable to remove optical media from a running VM although it is supported and doable from the failover cluster manager.
Please fix that.2 votes -
Custom Properties for VM Networks (and other objects)
As of today we've the possibility to add "custom properties" to some objects available in VMM (i.e. Hosts, Templates, VMs, ..) but it's not available for other/all objects.
It would be great to make these custom properties available across all objects like VM networks and others for which they're not available today.

Sysprep Requirement for Windows VM Templates
The requirement for running sysprep when preparing VM Templates (with Windows) looks a bit confusing, because as soon as you start converting finalized VM, the status changes to 'Sysprepping...'.
If VMM could do sysprepping on it's own, I'd like to be able to skip doing this step in my Task Sequence, because one of the last steps I'm doing is applying some hardening GPOs, which in turn, cause sysprep to succeed only after a subsequent reboot (and automating one is quite a challenge as apparently MDT doesn't like something that's being touched by the hardening policies)

Extend hardware templates, placement, and VM provisioning to account for DDA devices like GPUs
I propose extending the hardware template to add a DDA assignment for a GPU or NVME device. Handle the placement logic to account for these devices, and perform the PCI dismount/mount process during VM provisioning.
